The payload
Franklin 1 is a dedicated microgravity payload for protein crystallization, flown on commercial small satellites. Sealed process work, crystallization, and optical process data. Higher-cadence runs: more conditions, more replicates. Results come home as prioritized science data.

The environment
On Earth, gravity-driven convection, sedimentation, and buoyancy interfere with how proteins nucleate and grow. In true microgravity those forces are largely absent. Franklin 1 uses that condition for protein crystallization: higher-quality crystals for drug design, and clearer process data delivered as science packets.
Beyond low-Earth orbit, additional radiation environments become available. Franklin 1 can include sample and system exposure records alongside the primary crystallization experiment.
Microgravity removes gravity-driven interference so researchers can see how proteins nucleate and grow more clearly. Franklin 1 is built for that protein-crystallization work, and to send the insight home as data.

The company
Atom One Space is a Florida company founded by Bryan Johnson, a Space Coast native. He grew up with launches as part of the landscape. After fifteen years in health insurance — working with thousands of patients and watching the limits of Earth-bound medical research — and after losing his father, Franklin, to cardiovascular disease, he set out to make true microgravity research accessible. Franklin 1 is a vehicle for university labs, pharmaceutical teams, biology groups, and other research organizations to get LEO process and optical data they cannot collect on the ground.
The payload is named Franklin for that reason. Cardiovascular, oncology, neurological, and metabolic research remain important to the mission. Franklin 1 is a sealed protein-crystallization payload: process and optical data. Longevity work is formulation and solid-state. Radiation work is sample and system exposure beyond LEO.
Bryan is not a career scientist or satellite engineer. Imagination plus execution is what he brings. The goal is practical and human: better research conditions in LEO, so university, pharma, and biology teams can move faster, and better medicines can reach patients on Earth.
